Imagine the blue waters of the Shima River flowing down the canyon like a twisting ribbon - this is the basis for the name "The Blue Ribbon.”
From 2003 until 2006, Jesse lived in Nakanojo town as a JET Programme English teacher. After all these years, he was unable to forget the sweeping vistas, vibrant mountains, bubbling hot springs, and warm hearts of Nakanojo. And thus, he came back with his family, hoping to find a place again in the town.
During the time Jesse lived in Japan, he deeply missed the pizzas of his youth. Many experiments occurred in the small oven toaster in his apartment. But after not being able to reproduce the flavors and textures he desired, he trained for 13 years in Los Angeles, searching for elusive methods and ingredients that would come together to make the perfect pizza. Now, he is back in Nakanojo to show you the results.
California Pizza is a style of pizza that generally has thin crust and lots of flavor. Using local ingredients and being creative with toppings and sauce combinations are the hallmarks of the style. Don’t you think this is the perfect pizza for a place like Nakanojo?
From the fragrant Hen of the Woods mushrooms grown in the Kuni region of town, to the colorful variety of fruits and vegetables seen all around, we hand make dough, marinara sauce, and even Italian sausage in order to match the soaring flavors found in this place.
While it goes without saying, toppings like pepperoni, olives, cilantro, and sriracha are all widely available in pizza shops around the world. However, these toppings are all but unknown in the pizzas of Japan. The Blue Ribbon takes these traditional and popular toppings and mixes them with the local bounty available to make a pizza that you couldn’t eat anywhere else.
Lunch time at the Blue Ribbon features a selection of slices from our recommended menu. We also sell our unique dough as frozen balls in case you would like to try your hand at making a masterpiece.
We would love to experience the sights and flavors of this town of infinite possibilities with you. Let’s eat!
